Spoilheap Archaeology is run by freelance archaeological specialist, Sue Anderson.
An East Anglian born and bred, Sue studied archaeology at Durham University and, following her first degree, went on to research human remains for her MPhil thesis. Her first professional work was as an excavator and she worked for the Trust for Wessex Archaeology and, briefly, for Test Valley Archaeological Trust. Hampshire County Museums then offered her work as a cataloguer and subsequently as a freelance researcher and human bone specialist.
English Heritage contracts in human remains followed soon after, and Sue returned to her home county of Norfolk to work on them. She was soon employed by Suffolk County Council as a finds specialist and project officer, and stayed there for a number of years. A new opportunity arose and she became Head of Post-Excavation Services at CFA Archaeology Ltd, based near Edinburgh.
In 2013, Sue decided to return to Norfolk and set up Spoilheap Archaeology to work as a sole trader. Her clients include national heritage bodies, county councils, university departments, commercial archaeology units, museums, charities, educational trusts and sole traders. Quotes and references can be provided on request.
Sue is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Archaeologists (MCIfA), a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (FSA Scot), and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA). She has recently completed a PhD at the University of East Anglia, on the subject of medieval pottery in East Anglia.
